Ridge Vents – Helping Your Home Breath
What is a ridge vent?
A Ridge vent is a gap that is left right along the peak-line of the roof. It is usually designed in a way to cover the roof from above the gap that is at the top where the two sides of the roof meet. A ridge vent is slightly raised and allows air to flow freely from both sides.
Why do we need ridge vents?
When looking at it from outside, a house with ridge vents looks much prettier than a roof with traditional roof vents that interrupt the roofline. But it is not all about the looks. They actually serve a purpose: letting the house breath. When air flows up one side of the vent, it pushes the air into the house, while in turn sucking out the old air from inside.
This pushing and pulling of air serves three main purposes. The first is that it allows stale or stagnant air to escape from the house, thus ventilating it naturally.
The second purpose is to keep the house cool. This is of great importance for rooms, like an attic for example, at the top of the house that are closer to the roof. When the sun heats up the roof, the temperature would also rise in the rooms. Having these vents lets the warm air on the inside be replaced with cooler air from the outside.
The third purpose is to keep the house dry. When the weather is cold outside, there is a tendency of condensation occurring in warm enclosed places like in a house. Water that is used or spilled in the house, while taking a shower or doing the dishes, generates moisture. And if that moisture were to be allowed to be, then it could damage a house by creating problems like mould. A ridge vent lets the cold air on the outside come into the house and helps in drying the moisture up.
Every House Needs One
As we have seen above, apart from the decorative values, ridge vents serve a very serious purpose in the maintenance of a house. Designing or building a home with one, could seriously lengthen the lifetime of a home.
