Electrical system basics – Technical Terms
Watts; electric power consumed is measured in watts (w for short). Every electrical appliance has a wattage rating marked on its rating plate. The higher the wattage rating, the more electricity the appliance consumes when it is in use.
Amps; the amount of current flowing in a conductor is measured in amperes (amps or A for short). With a cable or flex, the greater the number of Alps it carries, the thicker its conductors must be. It current-carrying capacity also depends on its length and whether it is running through thermal insulation
Volts; the electrical pressure that drives current through a conductor is measured in volts (V for short). The pressure of the public supply in Britain has been standardised at 230 volts. The supply voltage may vary by plus 10 per cent (23V) or minus 6 Percent (14V) and a further drop of 6V is permitted on individual circuits. Voltage – sensitive equipment, such as a computer or a word processor, can be protected from voltage variations by a surge suppresser. Batteries and some portable generators and transformers supply other voltages for lighting and appliances that have been designed to operate on them.
AC and DC; Mains electricity in Britain is alternating current (AC). It has an oscillating wave pattern, rather like waves of the sea, but the pattern is regular – the complete cycle from crest to crest occurs 50 times a second. This is known as the frequency of the supply and is written as 50- or 50Hz (short for Hertz). The electricity from batteries is direct current (DC). Its continuous flow of electrons is steady in its direction, with no oscillation. The advantage of alternating current is that it can be transformed from one voltage to another. Because of this, a power station can supply a very high voltage to feed a supply at 230V to many individual properties. Inside the home, the voltage can be reduced again by a transformer, to supply a doorbell, low voltage lighting or a computer printer, for instance.
