Solar Hot Water Panels – Create Your Own Hot Water Supply
Solar hot water panels are an excellent energy saver for your home and you can even make them yourself for very little costs. While the simplicity of the system makes it so anyone can understand and implement, the environmentally friendly nature of the solar panels gives the added dimension of not needing to pay anything to fuels the solar panels as all the power comes from the infinite energy of the sun.
The basic concept of solar hot water panels is that a solar collector is fastened to the roof or sun facing wall. The collector comprises a glass topped insulated box with a flat solar absorber panel ie. a section of sheet metal painted black for maximum efficiency which is attached to copper pipes.
Alternatively, instead of the sheet metal and copper pipes, metal tubes surrounded by glass cylinders could be incorporated and do the same job.
The water supply to the panel can work on a return and feed system from a hot water storage tank where the heated water is stored. Cold water is pumped out to the solar hot water panels. Heated up and returned to the storage tank.
In order to allow for bad weather, the storage tank needs to be slightly larger than normal but this particular collector can supply enough hot water for an entire family.
The best application for this system is generally for hot water for washing and bathing rather than heating the house as the times when central heating are most required tends to be at night and in the winter when solar gains lower due to lack of sunlight.
The recommended use for such a system would be to incorporate it in conjunction with a hot water central heating system and thus lower your energy bills significantly.
